Résumé
A macroenvironmental approach was used to investigate the role of aerobic sporeforming bacteria in northern Chihuahuan Desert soils. The study site was an alluvial fan piedmont, or bajada, 40 km NNE of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Total viable counts in Bajada soils averaged 13 x 104 counts/g viable counts, or 7 x 104 spores/g soil. Although bacilli constituted a high proportion of the total viable counts in these soils, they occurred virtually entirely as metabolically inactive spores
