EVALUATION OF CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CASHEW (Anacardium occidentale L.) FOR USE IN PUBLIC HEALTH

Résumé
The cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is considered a culture of high economic and social value for the Northeast region of Brazil. The cashew culture has increased due to clonage biotechnology which improved the quality of cashew tree fortifying characteristics for rainfed farming. The cashew nut contains lipids, proteins and in a lesser extent phenols and phytosterols The cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a mixture of meta-alkylphenols, having as main constituents anacardic acid, cardol and cardanol. The objective of this thesis was : 1. To evaluate the biological potential of CNSL constituents as larvicides against Aedes aegpti, the main vector of Dengue, elucidate the mechanism of action by evaluating the inhibition of acetilcholinesterase enzyme and the toxicity against Artemia salina. 2. To compare the cashew clones CP 06, CP 76, BRS 226, BRS 189, BRS 274 and BRS 275, from Embrapa Agroindustrial Tropical in relation to the content of lipids, fatty acids profile, phytosterols, proteins, phenolics and antioxidant activity. The CNSL was extracted with hexane in a soxhlet apparatus. All the constituents of CNSL showed good antioxidant and larvicide activities and inhibitory action against the enzyme acetilcolinestarase. Cardanol showed lower toxicity and better larvicide activity being selected as a promising agent against Aedes aegypti for using in the control of Dengue. Total lipids and protein content varies among clones, 52.8-63.4% and 25.0117.57%, respectively. All clones presented significant differences in phytosterols, total phenols and antioxidant activity. The antiradical activity varied from IC50 0.43μg/mL for CP76 and IC50 10.92 μg/mL for BRS 224. Antioxidant potential was directly related to total phenol content. CP 76 showed better antioxidant properties, BRS 274 presented higher content in phytosterols and BRS275 showed higher protein content. Clonage caused changes in secondary and primary metabolites of cashew nut clones. Therefore the consumption of a mixture of cashew nuts from these three clones is indicated due to their better nutritional and nutraceutical properties.
