Résumé
The Chena hill is a priority site for biodiversity conservation in Región Metropolitana ; also presents an isolated hill condition due to urban and agricultural development around it. The Chena hill administrative division makes difficult to protect efficiently its natural system, causing environmental degradation. The „Casas Viejas de Chena‟ property, under the administration of the Chilean Army, is a multipurpose territory, with military instruction inside the priority site, and farming outside as its primary usages. The research general goal was to elaborate a sustainable land management plan with aims to biodiversity conservation. The method used was derived from the method developed in the INNOVA-CORFO project “Sistemas de producción sustentable para ecosistemas de montaña (Sustainable production system for mountain environments)” by University of Chile. The evaluation of the environmental components of the land indicates a high degree of soil and vegetation degradation in the priority site sector, besides problems related to deficient waste handling and apparently, related to low quality of irrigation water. To conciliate both, military instruction and farming with sustainability and biodiversity conservation was settled as the land goal. The sustainable estate management plan is composed of an estate organizing request, a management plan for all the management units and a strategy for appropriate implementation. It is highlighted as results the following : the ecological restoration proposal for most of the priority site, the implementation of a waste handling system for estates and the implementation of biofilters for irrigation water and the implementation of bushes at the limit of the farming unit. It is highlighted as conclusions the following : recognition of potential ecosystem services for Santiago’s basin, biodiversity protection and conservation, recreation and landscape beauty and carbon sequestration. Although the current estate situation is an evident environmental degradation situation, Chile‟s army has both intention and tools for a sustainable environmental management development in their estates. For that reason, estate administration should lead its efforts and resources towards appropriate implementations of their arrangements. To conclude, the management measures suggested for the „Casas Viejas de Chena‟ are an opportunity for Chilean army to join closely with civil society in ecological restoration and sclerophyllous native forest regeneration within Santiago‟s basin project
