Description
Annually, the tequila industry generates thousands of tons of agave and millions of liters of
vinasse. Mostly, they are not adequately treated and contaminate the environment.
Composting has been the most widely used technology for the treatment of bagasse and
occasionally for vinasse as well. However, just one report of large-scale composting have
been found, and studies using bagasse compost as substrate for growing agave in containers
have not been located. For these reasons, this research had the following aims : 1) the
characterization of large-scale composting process of bagasse by assessing physical and
chemical parameters as well as a population dynamics study of the most important
microbial groups involved in composting : bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes, 2) physical
and chemical characterization of finished bagasse compost, and 3) the evaluation of
different types and mixtures of bagasse compost as substrate for the cultivation of agave in
containers. The study was conducted in a compost pile with an initial weight of
approximately 331 tons which was monitored during 300 days ; the compost samples were
analyzed chemical, physical and microbiologically. The investigation of compost as
substrate for agave cultivation was held in a nursery and agave fields for two successive
years ; a total of 31 blends and seven types of bagasse compost were assessed
