Hordeum vulgare var. N.P. 13, N.P. 18, Presto and
Munsing were selected to study this problem. The work
was divided into two parts*
I. The first part deals with thetffect of different
periods of desiccation treatments on enzymes
catalase, lipase, amylase as well as carbohydrate,
SH and ascorbic acid metabolism during the
juvenile’ phase of N.P. 13 and Munsing. The seeds
t
were germinated and were subjected to desiccation
treatment at each stage of germination. The
germinating seedlings were desiccated in chambers
maintained at zero humidity for five and ten days.
Desiccation chambers with this humidity were
prepared by keeping concentrated H2SO4 in
, desiccators of 8* diameter. Germinating seedlings
were kept in these desiccation chambers for the
required period of time. These desiccated
seedlings were t hen revived by keeping them on
moistened sterilized sand in a Petri dish. The
t
seedlings were considered revived when they reached
the next stage of germination to the one at which
they were given desiccation treatment.

Various metabolic activities were studied in the
seedling thus treated at different growth stages.
Theestimations were carried out a£ter separating
embryo axes and endosperms. The metabolic
/
activities were determined, (i) before the
initiation of the desiccation treatment, i.e. in
the undesiccated material (li) at the end of the
desiccation period and (ill) after revival.
The estimations were carried out up to the 4th
stage of germination.
