Résumé
The context in which this investigation was developed is marked, on one side, by great losses, by the traditional systems of chicken raising to the industrial avian complex, of space in the local markets of the Brazilian semi-arid region. On the other side, there are examples of resistance by the peasants to the search of alternatives to the industrial avian model. In consequence, the main objectives of this Thesis was the development of referential knowledge in peasant groups about organizational processes and agroecological practices in order to improve the contribution of chicken raising to increase income and family consumption in a typical zone of the Brazilian semi-arid region. The theoretical mark of the thesis is based on an analysis of the Brazilian industrial avian complex with emphasis on the risks for the country’s food sovereignty and the impacts of this model on human health and the environment ; a brief analysis of the causes of the civilizing crisis caused by the “modern agriculture” ; the pattern of Agroecology as a science capable of solving the agro-alimentary crisis ; an approach, from the contributions of principles of Agroecology until the establishment of the notion of human coexistence with the semi-arid ; and concepts and fundamental principles for the practice of participatory investigation. The methodology emphasizes the participatory monitoring as a key instrument for the apprenticeship. With that objective the investigation was carried out with a group of twelve peasant women in the Irapuá community, in the city of Novas Russas (Ceará), who observed the execution, the follow up and the evaluation of the systems of traditional chicken raising (Dona Salu and Dona Socorro) for a period of 24 months. As for the results, it should be emphasized : the fact that in both cases they were efficient for the almost permanent income offer to the families during two consecutive years of drought. This shows resilience as to the problems caused by a prolonged drought ; the data, analyzed in a comparative form with national average of meat and egg consumption, certainly coincides with the fact that chicken raising is strategic for the provision in quantity and quality of food for the families of the semi-arid region ; the epistemological and methodological principles in the investigative process, with the adoption of an Agroecological focus, strengthened systems of chicken raising with the more socioenvironmental sustainability and preservation of local peasant culture ; Besides these, they increased the relation between farmer and consumer, creating more opportunities for occupation of local markets for the peasants. On the final considerations, it could be stated that the results contribute for the scientific demonstration that it is possible to create alternatives to the present agro-industrial model of chicken and egg production. For this purpose, the participatory methodology brought evident contributions as to the possibilities of investigative processes with effective participation of the women farmers ; and this would not mean loss or remoteness from the generation of scientific knowledge. Finally, in spite of the fact that there is much to be done on the subject of this thesis, after this investigation, it will be possible to offer suggestions to public authorities for the planning of public policies capable of stimulating and strengthening projects of traditional chicken raising for the conditions of the Brazilian semi-arid region.
