Résumé
The lack of electricity distribution in many developing countries is one of the first limits to a sustainable improvement of the life quality. Access to electricity allows to refrigerate perishables and to disinfect water and strongly reduce the impact of those illness that are the main cause of mortality in rural countries. This paper aims to provide an exhaustive description of those technologies currently available for the electrification of small villages in an isolated rural context. For each technology the most common designs are highlighted and the main suppliers in the market are listed. Besides to those solutions dedicated to the production of electrical energy such as solar, wind and biomass, also the most suitable technologies for cooking and for producing potable water are investigated, in order to satisfy in a more efficient way the basic needs of the populations. Two scenarios are presented as representative of different environmental contexts : the first village is located in the tropical belt of Ghana near the seaside while the second one is located in the desert of Southern Tunisia. For the first case each technology is evaluated and designed in order to improve the quality of life in the village, currently without electricity, and taking into account the demand curve. Solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbine are selected from commercial devices while for the biomass fuelled ORC a new design is proposed. The designed ORC is more efficient than the commercial devices presently sold on the market and it guarantees a good flexibility and reduced maintenance. In the characterization of Tunisia just guidelines and general design criteria are suggested due to the lack of detailed information and since some topics are already covered during the description of Ghana reference case.
