Résumé
The study, drawing on such theories as the induced-innovation and agricultural intensification, investigates the extent to which farm households’livelihood strategies have been consistent with practices that can generally be expected to contribute towards improving living conditions in a sustainable manner. This is done by relating some key structural variables of landholdings as well as household socioeconomic and demographic variables with the principal livelihood strategies of farm households, and assessing their implications to some useful welfare indicators and soil fertility. several hypotheses have been drawn and tested using data obtained from a household sample survey in one district of Central Tigray - a typically low potential area. Descriptive and econometric analyses show that the livelihood strategies of most farm households are not consistent with sustainable livelihood. However significant differences exist among individual farm households, depending on the structural variables of landholding (particularly farm size) and socioeconomic characteristics. We have also obtained results that apparently contradict major theories. while suggesting some policy recommendations that need to be considered to better induce the rural poor to effectively respond to the challenges and thereby achieve sustainable improvement in their living condition, the study also ventures to indicate directions the research could go to enlarge the scope and gain more confidence in the results.
