Résumé
The study analysis pattern of plant diversity in relation to land cover changes in Burkina Faso and Benin, West Africa. In the first part of the study land cover/land use pattern were documented and analyzed in three study areas along a climatic and land use gradient. Multi temporal LANDSAT satellite data were classified with several hundred georeferenced samples of field data to obtain recent land cover maps with a high spatial and thematic resolution. Overall classification accuracy reached 74% to 87%. In the two Sudanian study regions land use change over a time period of 15 years were analyzed with aerial photographs, LANDSAT images and field data. In the second part of the study botanical field data of several thousand georeferenced phytosociological samples were combined with environmental data layer in an ecological niche modeling approach to spatially predict the potential distribution of plant species. Distribution maps of single species were evaluated with independent test data and statistical measures and interpreted by expert knowledge. Consequently distribution maps of single species were combined to obtain maps of plant diversity for the study regions. The investigations are part of the "BIOTA West Africa" research network on biodiversity, sustainable use and conservation in Africa, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF).
