Villages are Protecting Varanus griesus and Hyaena hyaena (Turkey)

Titre : Villages are Protecting Varanus griesus and Hyaena hyaena (Turkey)

Pays : Turquie

Numéro projet : TUR/SGP/OP4/RAF/10/Y3/12

Domaine : Biodiversity

Durée : 5/2010 — 7/2011

Bénéficiaire : Birecik Cooperative

Birecik Steppes are rare and important grounds on which Varanus griseus and Hyaena hyaena live. In 2007 and 2008, researchers proved presences of Vranus griseus and Hyaena hyaena around Akp ?nar and ??hbekir Villages in Birecik. Along with visual recordings, informations on their habitats are provided. Unfortunately, local people know and face with Varanus griseus and Hyaena hyaena for many years and sometimes kill them.
The aim of the project is to locate the grounds on which those animals feed and nest and to ensure local people participation on conservation efforts. Effective conservation is only possible by this way. Especially trainings based on youths of villages and trainings in village schools in order to impress family members will avail for effective conservation. With support of two consultants from those villages, there will be workshops in both trainings.
It is only possible for Hyaena hyaena and Varanus griseus to live and breed in good conditions when local people looked after these animals. Otherwise not a single conservation status is enough for these species to live. It is necessery to implement these trainings immediately so that the last members of Hyaena hyaena and Varanus griseus wouldn’t die out.
With this project, we aim to provide local conservation which is more sustainable way to conserve and to bring conservation status for habitats of these animals.
