ECHO has provided EUR 600,000 for DanChurchAid to improve the availability and accessibility of safe water and sanitation, and promote awareness on health and personal hygiene practices for conflict affected persons in Sudan The primary target groups are the displaced and conflict-affected persons of Central Darfur State, Sudan, with particular focus on the most vulnerable, including women, unaccompanied minors, disabled people and children. Darfur has been the site of an extensive political and economical conflict, which escalated in 2003 and to date is estimated to have resulted in the death of up to 300,000 people and the displacement of 2.7 million Darfurians.
