Contexte
Hand dug wells dry up during the dry period. Machine drilled wells are expensive and some areas are not accesible. Low cost manual drilling can be a solution for the construction of safe drinking water points, self supply and irrigation, also in dry periods. However, this technique is unknown and no manual drilling sector exists in Tigray. At least for parts of the project area the circumstances for manual drilling look promising (Annex 2 Quick scan). TWF Ethiopia is promoting the realisation of wells over the last 6 years and has established (and runs) 3 agricultural training centres. The people of Tigray have shown initiatives in realising (hand dug) wells and improving their livelihood.

Résumé
In Tigray a low cost manual drilling sector is absent. Overall project aims to set up a manual drilling sector to facilitate safe communal drinking water points. First a feasibility for manual drilling must be done. If results are promising phase 2 implementation (to be funded later) will be entered.

Objectifs
1.Insight in : •potential of manual drilling in (parts of) the project area •(supply) chain, availability & costs of materials and its consequences for Ph.2 •scope and focus of manual drilling program 2.Enough interested enterprises/individuals to offer manual drilling services (and for attending training Ph.2) 3.at least 2000 people access safe drinking water Final outcome at the end of Ph.1 is well-thought decision if we will enter Ph.2 and in what direction, focus, costs, etc.
