Human security through inclusive socio-economic development in Upper Egypt

Egypte

Titre : Human security through inclusive socio-economic development in Upper Egypt

Pays /Région : Egypte

Durée : June 2013 - May 2016

Contexte
Shrinking revenues from tourism, reduced foreign direct investment, rising inflation and political turmoil have led to the contraction of the economy and have decelerated the overall rate of development. Communities in Upper Egypt, an area home to 66 per cent of the country’s extreme poor, with a poverty incidence almost twice as high as the national average, are particularly impacted by the sudden deceleration of the economy. Faced with severe unemployment, the acute drop in incomes combined with decreasing agricultural outputs have resulted in growing social tensions and a rise in economic, food, health, personal, environmental and community insecurities faced by the people of Upper Egypt.

Présentation
The overall goal of the project is to improve the human security of vulnerable households, youth, women and children in Upper Egypt. Specifically, the project aims to (i) promote community-owned priority interventions ; (ii) improve employment opportunities ; (iii) increase employability of the local population ; (iv) enhance agricultural productivity ; (v) support entrepreneurship ; and (vi) strengthen social cohesion.

Bénéficiaires
The project directly benefits 18,000 women and men living in the Governorate of Minya, located in Upper Egypt. Moreover, surrounding communities, comprising of a population of 150,000 people will indirectly benefit from the project through revitalized local economy, increased availability of skilled labour, the rehabilitation of infrastructure, and increased availability of basic social services.
