Résumé
The production of tef has been constrained by the low yielding capacity of the crop and the depleting soil fertility. One pot experiment under glasshouse condition (in Austria), harvested 45 days after sowing, and three field experiments (in Ethiopia) were carried out to investigate genetic variation and relationships among grain yield and N use efficiency traits using twenty tef genotypes. The zero and 1 g N/6 kg air dried soil/pot, and 0, 4 and 8 g N/m2 fertiliser rates were used. In the pot experiment, the contribution of shoot total N (g/pot) to shoot dry weight (g/pot) decreased (73 to 54%) and that of biomass production efficiency (BPE) (shoot dry weight/shoot total N) increased (27 to 46%) with the increase in N rate from zero to 1 g N/pot. In the field experiment, grain yield (g/m2) (h2 = 0.74) and total biomass (g/m2) (h2 = 0.88) had high broad-sense heritability. Variation in grain yield was related to the variation in total biomass (rg = 0.58 ; rp = 0.60), total plant N (g/m2) (rg = 0.75 ; rp = 0.73) and panicle seed weight/plant (rg = 0.46 ; rp = 0.46). The contribution of uptake efficiency to N use efficiency for grain yield decreased (75 to 55%) and that of utilisation efficiency increased (22 to 43%) with the increase in N supply from 4 to 8 g N/m2. These results also suggested that grain yield and N use efficiency could be improved by improving N uptake.
