Résumé
The study deals with political, social, economical and religious processes of transition in the village communities of the Manding hills of southwestern Mali. The basic theme is the appropriation of foreign ideas, modes of organisation and goods, as well as the reinterpretation of the precolonial past. The starting point is a study of the politics of decentralisation and democratisation, which forese the creation of rural communes. I confront the conception of the reform by Malian elites with its practical, local appropriation. I show that the ideas of the elites are informed by colonial policy, ethnography and concepts from the French revolution arguing for the abolition of slavery. Meanwhile, local reactions are to a considerable extent informed by precolonial and colonial experiences, which are retraced with the help of oral traditions. An analysis of the strategic usage of local social, religious, political identities and their interaction with Islam provides the basis for an emic theory of charismatic domination and historical change. Based on a dichotomy between allochtonous and autochtonous people, warriors and priests, it provides the foundation for a critique of anthroplogical concepts of ideology and history.
