Résumé
Drought is perceived as one of the costliest natural disasters and the least understood, given the difficulty in defining its beginning and end, its slow development and its multiple regional features. This is compounded by the large number of indices that enable their monitoring, which provide numerous definitions that often confuse agricultural and water resources planners. This research aims to improve the knowledge of the spatio-temporal variability of meteorological droughts in southern South America, based on the comparison of various drought indices at multiple time scales and the development of a climatology for the 1961-2008 period. From an objective regionalization, seven homogeneous regions were identified, which are geographical and climatically coherent, and the different temporal variabilities of the drought index were analyzed. This regionalization allowed identifying the possible influence of the El Niño/La Niña in the time series, with emphasis on drought occurrences. Finally, some applications relevant for the agricultural and water resources sectors were analyzed, and the future changes of drought characteristics were estimated for the study area.
