Résumé
Limitation of granivorous birds in central Monte desert was evaluated in this work. Evidence showed that these birds would not usually be limited by the abundance of seeds during the non-breeding season, but only in occasional years given that their abundances were only affected during years of extremely low seed production. During the breeding season, lack of association between the abundance of adults and the production of seed, the absence of interspecific territorial defense and high survival and site-fidelity suggest that seeds would neither be limiting birds at this time of the year. The influence of food would be only translated in granivorous birds increasing their productivity in superabundant years, something more associated with life history traits and opportunism than with food limitation. Evidence suggests that the territorial behavior of these birds would be involved in the limitation of these populations during the breeding season instead. Movement rates would be the proximate most important factor influencing local abundances, and not so productivity or mortality, although the latter could be involved in those occasional low seed production years. In addition, results reinforce the idea that the interspecific competition would not be a dominant factor in structuring the community of this ensemble of birds.
