Résumé
Sustainability integrates economical, social and ecological systems into into a proces of practical management and conservation of the natural resources. Its permanent goal is to increase or at least not to reduce resources ; where an increment means better human life quality. At Mexico, forestry activities represent, in one hand, an important economical aspect for inhabitants in different ecosystems (temperate, arid, and tropical). On the other hand, these activities have an impact on water, soil and biodiversity conservation. As an alternative to study forestry activities focusing on its sustainability, the sutheast of Zacatecas state was used as a model. This place is where Agave (Agave salmiana ssp crassispina) is distributed. For the last years, Agave´s harvest has been increasing ; however, economical indicators or social life quality hasn’t increased as well. In the establishment of the evaluation method, 35 indicators were used ; 7 correspond to the social system, 5 to the economical system, and 23 to the forest ecological system. The evaluation period was from 1990 to 2001 and included three counties. Social indicators increased during the period of the study ; however, accesses to services had lower increases. Economical indicators did show weak increase trends throught time. Forest ecological indicators decrease slowly through the period 1990 – 1997, and decrease abruptly from 1998 to 2001 due to an intensive Agave´s harvest. Indicators behavior caused an accelerated decrement on sustainability index since 1997. Index values were under 0.60 for the whole study period. Those values represent a MEDIUM LOW sustainability degree, which means the necessity of an increment in human life quality, economical levels, and a development of an Agave´s harvest control. The present study includes, for the first time, the use of population attributes of a specie in order to build indicators which have a big specific weight in the sustainability index behavior. The methodology of this study can be used for evaluation of sustainability on any terrestrial or aquatic plant or animal species. In adition, it can be applied at county level or land management unit, like the lands that have management permits from the Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT). The application of this methodology on fishery can open a new important research line.
