Grazing animal production systems located in the arid and semiarid areas of Mexico are of big importance for the economy. Among the main reazons are : the big surface comprehend, the grazing population, and because the weather and plant communities they use for animal production. U sing the inquiring study the main traits of the ruminant production systems in this area were defined. The main purpose was to detect the main limiting factors that affect the productive efficiency. To a total of 2291 cattlemen, 113 questionaries were applied containing 40 reactives and 21 complementary questions. The interviewed people are inhabitants ofthe three main localities ofthe municipality. Among the results it was detected than 86.73% combine the cattle production with agricuIture activities. 81.42% correspond to the ejido land property system, half of them is devoted to the grazing production activities at leas during the last 20 years, a third of them work with bovines mainly under a dual purpose system, milk production or cow-calf system as a last alternative. 60% of the interviewed posses not genetically improved cattle, none of them controls the grassland carrying capacity aIthough three quarters of them implements grassland improvement practices, as well as three quarters do not posses a cattle breeding program and 97% do not use artificial insemination. After the dry season the second main problem for the cattlemen is the animal products commercialization. 88% have received support from the federal, state or municipal government as well as from the local cattlemen association in order to solve productive or commercialization constrains. It is rny recommendation to conform a cattle production plan in agreement with the cattlemen as well as the government agencies devoted to support the grassland and the animal production industry. It must be considered the genetic programs for the herd, sustentable use of the grassland, facilities construction to avoid water run-off, support for the products commercialization as well as proffessional and technical support during the production process.
