A field investigation was conducted at the Wulanaodu Experimental Station ofDesertification, Chinese Academy of Sciences, western Horqin Sandy Land, Northeast China.The objectives of this study were to describe the nematode community dynamics withplantation ages and vertical distribution under Artemisia ordosica Krasch plantations, to showthe indicative role of nematode for the soil condition during sandy land recovery.The number of nematode, diversity and stability increased with plantations age. Signifantdifference in the total number of nematodes were observed in an age sequence of plantations.Bacterivores nematode were the dominate rophic group.The average abundance ofomnivores-predators nematode and plant parasites nematode were lower and fungivoresnematode had the lowest average abundance.Twenty-five families and 44 genera wereobserved,including 11 genera of plant parasites nematode,12 genera of bacterivoresnematode,3genera of fungivores nematode,18 genera of omnivores-predators nematode.Thediversity index of TD, H’, J’, SR increased with plantations age at 5~15cm layer,andλdecreased.Under different ages plantations of Artemisia ordosica Krasch, the differences of totalnumber of nematodes were significant between deffirent layers of soil. Significant differencewas observed in the number of trophic group of soil nematodes in different verticaldistribution. The diversity index of TD of 10 year plantation andλ、H’、MI of 10 yearplantation were siginificant in different vertical distribution. The dynamics of nematodecommunity composition may indicate soil condition during sandy recovery.
