Résumé
The main question was to test whether the application of semi-liquid manure and straw or the cultivation of winter cover crops (legumes and mustard) succeeded by the cash crops spring barley and sugar beet had an impact on the extraction of both mineral and organic nitrogen by electro- ultrafiltration (EUF). This experiment was carried out in field trials in Austria between 1991 and 1993 in arid and non-arid climates in combination with Mitscherlich pot and incubation experiments. Mineralization and immobilization after organic manuring were mainly reflected in the EUF-NO_3-fraction and less in the 5 EUF- N_o_r_g- fraction. The N uptake of both covers is generally high which can be observed in the decreasing concentration of the EUF-NO_3-fraction and therefore reduces N leaching. Heavy precipitation may cause nitrate leaching in legume cover crops, which lead to yield increases in arid climate. Mustard is practically resistent to remineralization, even under optimal conditions for mineralization. In soils with high natural N- availability benefits of cover crops and straw are for the most part due to the improvement of the physical conditions of the soil. Semi-liquid manure in addition to straw application or cover crops leads to yield improvements. Yields of cash crops ran be assessed by EUF-N-fractions, provided soil samples are taken in late autumn when most of the soil N has already been incorporated by the cover crops. Results of EUF analysis must be corrected by climatological and location data.
