The growth of d e s e rt g rasslan d v e g e ta tio n follo w in g a w ild f ir e on June 27 to 30, near Sasabe, A rizona, was measured by determ in in g th e changes in sp ecies com position and d e n sity on burned and c o n tro l n o rth and w est asp ec ts fo r two growing seasons a f t e r th e f i r e . The lin e in te rc e p t method, w ith 500 fe e t o f permanent lin e tr a n s e c ts , and the p o in t quadrat method, w ith 3,200 p o in ts , were employed on each of the study a r e a s . In a d d itio n , s e e d s ta lk production was measured fo r p e re n n ial g rasse s in te rc e p te d along th e lin e tr a n s e c ts . The growth response of f i f t y shrubs fo r each o f fiv e sp e cie s was observed follow ing th e f i r e . I n i t i a l l y , burning caused a red u ctio n in d e n sity o f p e re n n ial g r a s s ; but recovery r e s u lte d two growing seasons a f t e r th e f i r e . Some sp e cie s in creased m arkedly in d e n s ity , percentage com position, and number, fo llo w in g th e f i r e . S e e d sta lk p roduction o f burned p e re n n ial g rasse s was s l i g h t l y reduced the f i r s t growing season a f t e r th e f i r e ; but by the second growing season, p roduction was w ell above th a t of c o n tro l a r e a s . Shrubs did not f u lly reco v er w ith in two growing seasons a f t e r th e b u rn ; however, some sp e cie s recovered ra p id ly w hile o th ers were very s e n s itiv e to th e f i r e .
