Résumé
Effects of a controlled burn on basal cover and soil erosion were evaluated in a desert grassland range type near Cananea, Sonora, M exico. Basal cover was measured on burned and control plots prior to fire and during two growing seasons after burning by using the point- plot method. Ground level changes were measured by using a modifica tion of the point method. Ground level changes were very small on both burned and control plots during the period of this study. There was no statistically signi ficant difference between treatm ents. Basal cover of burned and unburned plots decreased from season to season. The differences between seasons were highly significant ; however, the differences in basal cover between burned and control plots were not significantly different. Climatic conditions appeared to be the main factors that caused the decrease in cover of the understory vegetation on the study area. The role of fire in June was small and did not cause significant damage to basal cover or increase soil erosion on the desert grassland site studied.
