Présentation
The proposed project is addressing the improper management of Agro-chemicals, including POPs (persistent organic pollutants) and chemicals gives rise to enormous problems for human health and the environment. Pesticides containing organochlorine and organophosphates as active ingredients have been reported to cause cancer, birth defects, nervous system disorders, heart, kidneys and lung diseases. The project will empower agriculture extension officers and smallholder farming community to reduce the risks of impact of agro-chemicals and encourage sustainable land management through practice of integrated pest management methods thereby contributing to the achievement of the GEF SGP Eritrea Country Strategy. It is also in line with international conventions that Eritrea is party to like the Stockholm convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and Basel convention on hazardous waste and safe disposal. This application for grants from GEF SGP is submitted by NUEW of Anseba Region, and the proposal has been developed with full agreement of the administrators of the two sub-regions of Adi-tekelezan and Elabered. During the process of developing the proposal, a representative number of small scale farmers within the landscape of Anqer-Balwa were consulted. The NUEW has already mobilized experts from Hamelmalo College of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture, knowledgeable of agro-chemical management who will provide courses on the subject in question. The NUEW of Anseba Region in consultation with the 2 sub-regional administration offices of Adi-tekelezan and Elabered and the Ministry of Agriculture will mobilize 50 lead farmers from the farming community of the landscape who will be trained and be responsible creating awareness in the villages. Training courses will be conducted at Eden town in the Women’s Hall (write exactly the name of the hall in Eden). The demonstration of integrated pest management will be held on the same site in a farm of selected farmer/s. Financial accounts will be maintained, funds utilized, and project implementation supervised and monitored in accordance with requirements laid out by GEF Small grants programme. The project is of one-year duration with GEF/SGP support of USD 30,000 with the same amount contribution from government, NUEW, and the community.
