Résumé
The study was carried out to assess the spatial and temporal variations of the quality of Arbaat water, and finding the relation between salinization and salinity of catchments area. Also to recognize changes of chemical properties and specifications of Arbaat water until is reach Port Sudan. The determinations included water properties as well as soil properties. Water sampling locations : namely Odroos (catchments area), Arbaat (river basin), and Port Sudan (target area). At each site, the soil samples were collected from two locations namely : Odroos (Khor Echynek, Dhrab, Oujur) in July and Arbaat (top of Khor, mid of Khor, lowest of Khor) in January with successive depths : 0-10, 10-30, 30-60 and 60-90 cm. Water analysis included calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorine, bicarbonate, carbonate, sulphate, nitrate, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solid, total hardness and pH. Soil analysis included saturation percentages (SP), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium plus magnesium (Ca2+ + Mg2+ ), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), organic carbon (O.C), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), phosphorous (P), clay, silt, sand, cations exchangeable capacity (CEC), exchangeable sodium percentages (ESP) and type texture. The water analysis data showed seasonal variations from the catchments area to the mouth of Khor Arbaat. The soils analysis data showed seasonal variations due to the amount of rainfall but not due to mineralization. Khor Arbaat at the mouth showed increased salinity , and organic matter content. The study led to conclusive results and recommendations. The results showed that there are clear variations of the quality of Arbaat water, that properties of water change from locations to other. In general, the results indicated that the concentrations of salts in water are increasing from catchments area to target place, moreover there is positive and strong relation between salinity of water and soil properties in those areas.
