Présentation
Context : Supply of woodfuel in Shinyanga is in crisis. Due to its arid conditions and large numbers of livestock, there are hardly any forests left that can facilitate supply of woodfuel. Households of pastoralists use cowdung for fuel. Other households use fencing plants locally known as “Minyaa” for fuel. Considering that cowdung and human faeces could be raw materials for biogas, this project intends to promote wider uptake of biogas technology for cooking. Two models will be demonstrated : (i) Institutional model, which is appropriate for institutions such as schools and (ii) households model which is appropriate for individual households.
Project’s Primary Objective : To demonstrate the use of biogas as alternative energy for cooking in woodfuel crisis of Shinyanga District.
Implementation Strategies : 1. Install a demo biogas plant of an institutional model at Bugogo Primary School, Shinyanga
2. Install 20 household model biogas plants at Bugogo village for demonstration
Project sustainability strategies : 1. Train school students and teachers on how to operate and maintain the biogas plant on daily basis
2. Train recipient villagers and all other villagers on how to operate and maintain household biogas plants
3. Biogas is a need based technology. It will be the key source of energy in areas where supply of woodfuel is in crisis
