Résumé
The majority of the households in Afghanistan rely on agriculture and livestock. This project will empower existing farmer cooperatives and create new ones to improve production levels, link them with financial institutions (access to credit) and train them in veterinary care and marketing. In addition, a dairy processing unit, two oil processing enterprises and a greenhouse will be established.

Contexte
The Norwegian Project Office/ Rural Rehabilitation Association for Afghanistan (NPO/RRAA) started their operations with emergency assistance in Dawlatabad and Alburz. They gradually shifted from relief aid to structural development. In July 2008 NPO/RRAA started the Integrated Community Development Program in Dawlatabad and in 2010 in Alburz. NPO/RRAA created 22 cooperatives and provided technical and financial support. In the beginning, the cooperatives used to work in different sectors like agriculture, livestock, carpet weaving and small businesses. Later the cooperatives decided to specialize in one or two fields to improve their sustainability. Right now, the 22 cooperatives are functioning well and the livelihoods of members improved with regards to income, food security, health, education and social affairs. The cooperatives reported sustainable financial stability, more trust among the members and a better involvement of women in social affairs and income generating activities

Objectifs
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the sustainable enhancement of vulnerable farmers’ livelihoods (improve agriculture and livestock productivity) through empowering the already existing 22 farmer cooperatives and assisting 8 new farmer cooperatives. By the end of the project, the 4392 households involved in the cooperatives, have improved in a sustainable manner their food security situation by increasing their incomes through the technical and financial assistance from the project.
