Résumé
Karamoja Community Managed Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Project is implemented by Caritas Kotido and funded by Cordaid. The project aims to contribute to the economic and social transformation of conflict and disaster prone agro-pastoralists’ communities in Kotido and Kaabong districts of Kotido Catholic Diocese, Eastern Uganda.

Contexte
Karamoja, a vast dusty landscape in northeastern Uganda, is the country’s most disadvantaged region. Nearly 80% of the one million people live below the poverty line, and access to or use of basic health, nutrition and education services are lowest here. Although Karamoja is known as pastorlists areas, a recent study showes that around 90% lives from crop production and the majority of the household don’t own any livestock. Human welfare, living conditions and quality of life of the people in Karamoja have declined considerably in the past years. Chronic poverty is largely attributed to drought, climate change, disease outbreaks, social insecurity and conflict. Setting up the mechanisms to enable them to respond to disasters is key to secure their livelihoods, and help them to build resilience to hazards at the community levels.

Objectifs
The overarching goal of the project is to to empower the target communities with resources, knowledge and skills in order to be able to address the development gaps in managing drought, floods, epidemics and conflict.
