Feasibility study for an integrated water resources management plan in the pilot area of Rhéraya

Maroc

Titre : Feasibility study for an integrated water resources management plan in the pilot area of Rhéraya

Pays : Maroc

Durée : September, 2015 // April, 2016

Description
As a consequence of the demographic development of the region and the agricultural, industrial and tourism activities, the groundwater withdrawal for irrigation and drinking water supply has been constantly increasing in the past decades in the basin of Haouz-Mejjat. On the other hand years of draught have led to further decrease of the already limited renewable water intakes. This situation will even deteriorate in the future due to the predicted effects of climate change.
The project area spans over two provinces : Haouz and Marrakesh. The wadi Rheraya drains a watershed of 221 km² on the level of Tahanout station and over a length of 32 km. The area is bordered by the highest point of Toubkal with a slope of 1/5-1/45.

Objectifs
The overall objective of the wadi Rheraya basin study is to support the Moroccan partners in their activitiesregarding integrated water resources management, in particular : * Fight against water scarcity * Water supply to the population, the agricultural/ industrial and tourism sectors * Long-term groundwater protection, prevention of water resources pollution and waste water treatment/ reuse * Erosion reduction, improvement of flood management and promotion of good practices of storm water management * Vulnerability mitigation and risk reduction in connection with extreme weather and climate change * Improvement of water resources monitoring and water use control.
