Résumé
This study attempts explanation of the migrations which occurred in the Maradi region of Niger during the 1968-1974 drought in the context of modifications in the range and efficacy of traditional mechanisms for coping with drought during the twentieth century. It examines the hypothesis tha the cumulative impact of the process of modernization, consequent upon the colonization of the area by the French, was such that traditional methods for coping with drought were reduced and in some cases critically disputed and modified...The study includes an historical review of the impact of colonial policies and of modernization of the regional economy upon the principal societies of the region.
