The southwest region of the United States has recently been under drought conditions, and this has the potential to harm the long term sustainability of agriculture production, industrial innovation, and drinking water quality. Trends suggest that the region is likely to become drier and experience more severe droughts. This will make sustaining water supplies in the Southwest even more challenging. The inaccessibility and variability in groundwater data can make it challenging to examine impacts such as drought, changes in agriculture, and population variability. The purpose of this study is to advance our understanding of changes in groundwater levels and how they relate to water use and sustainability across the state of New Mexico. We have utilized both spatial and temporal methods to evaluate change in groundwater level using a groundwater level database. This report used historical data provided by several state governmental agencies. R-Statistic was used to predict and evaluate depth to water (DTW) in a weighted non-linear regression (Loess) model. Results of the model were then imported into Excel and ESRI’s ArcGIS software to analyze the change in depth to water over time and space. Four hypothesis were formed to reflect the purpose : groundwater levels are changing in New Mexico, increases in DTW are affected by water use, average change in depth to water for counties located along a major river are significantly different compared to counties not located on a major river, and wells located near major rivers typically have the lowest rate of increase in DTW. If drought conditions continue, surface water supplies may be restricted ; this could cause depth to water to increase at higher magnitudes and rates. Additional research is needed to understand what policy actions and infrastructure are needed to preserve the equity in water resources for future generations in New Mexico.
