Résumé
Microorganisms have increased and that may cause some health problems, so it has become necessary to find out new antibacterial agents to prevent pathogenic microorganisms and spoilage food. This experimental study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the Aloe vera leaves and gel extracts against selected pathogenic bacteria. Methodology : The methanol extract of the whole leaves of Aloe vera and the methanol and aqueous extracts of the gel were screened for in vitro antibacterial activity against five standard bacteria. Two Gram positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and three Gram negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi) bacteria using the cup plate agar diffusion method. The Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the most active aqueous extract of Aloe vera gel against the standard bacteria were determined using the cup plate agar diffusion method. The antibacterial activity of two reference drug (Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin) was detected against five standard bacteria and their activities were compared with the activity of the most active aqueous extract of the gel. Results : The whole leaves of Aloe vera methanolic extract showed moderate activity (16mm) against Bacillus subtilis, (15mm) against Staphylococcus aureus and no activity against all Gram negative organisms. The methanolic extract of the gel exhibited high activity (19mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and inactive against the rest of organisms tested. The aqueous extract of the gel showed low activity (12mm) against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and moderate activity (16mm) against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi and high activity (20mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The MIC was100mg/ml for Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and 25mg/ml for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi. The Comparison between the activity of the most active aqueous extract of Aloe vera gel and antibacterial activity of two reference drug (Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin) showed that the aqueous extract of Aloe vera gel inhibited Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus almost similar to 5(μg/ml) Ciprofloxacin. It also Inhibited Escherichia coli almost similar to 10(μg/ml) Ciprofloxacin and Gentamicin. It inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa similar to 10(μg/ml) Gentamicin and higher than 40(μg/ml) Ciprofloxacin Conclusion : The Aloe vera gel possessed antibacterial activity against the Gram positive and Gram negative organisms and therefore could be recommended in the treatment of various bacterial diseases.
