Résumé
This study was conducted in North Darfur State during December 2015 to January 2016 to identify ticks infesting domestic animals. A total of 120 heads of domestic animals (camels 20, cattle 20, sheep 20, goats 20, horses 20 and donkeys 20) were sampled for the presence of ticks from two localities, Kabkabyia and Saraf Omra. The results indicated that the domestic animals were infested with ten species of hard ticks belonging to three genera Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus and Amblyomma. The species found were Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi 397 (37.3%), Hyalomma rufipes 374 (35.1%), Hyalomma dromedarii 206 (19.3%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus 39 (3.7%), Rhipicephalus decoloratus 24 (2.3%), H. impeltatum 9(0.8%), H. impressum 9(0.8%), H truncatum. 4(0.4%), Rhipicephalus annulatus 2 (0.2%) and Amblyomma variegatum 1 (0.1%). The total number of ticks collected was 1065, all of which are famous for harboring and transmitting some arthropod-borne infections (heartwater, bovine anaplasmosis, bovine babesiosis and equine piroplosmosis). The most predominating tick species was Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi 37.3% while the least tick species found was Amblyomma variegatum(0.1%). Also R. e. evertsi was the only tick species that was recorded in most animals examined. The mean tick species on domestic animals examined in Kabkabyia was 8.36±0.85 and Saraf Omra 8.88±0.84. Animals older than four years carried the highest mean number of ticks 9.54±0.82. Animals younger than four years 7.50±0.86 indicating significant difference among these ages. Females carried more ticks 9.11±0.71 than males 7.68±1.08. Brown coat coloured animals carried the highest mean number of ticks 10.72±1.04 followed by white coat coloured 7.79±0.77 and the lowest mean number of ticks was in black coat coloured animals 5.28±0.57 showing a significant difference between them. Regarding species differences, camels, carried the highest mean tick infestation 16.70±2.07 followed by horses 10.5±1.49, cattle 7.85±0.74, sheep 6.80±0.59 and goats 6.10±0.61 and the lowest mean infestation was in the donkey 3.75±0.53.This study was conducted in the winter season and the result may have been different if other seasons are taken into consideration. Inspite of the short period of the study, some economically important ticks were reported. This study concludes that there are three genera and ten species of hard ticks in Kabkabyia and Saraf Omra localities. The study recommended conducting more research including more numbers of animals and more time to cover all seasons to determine the biology and distribution of ticks in these areas.
