Résumé
Cotton is the most important fiber and cash crop in the Sudan. The main bulk of the cotton crop was grown in the irrigated schemes.The objective of this study was to evaluate eight Egyptian cotton experimental lines (extra-long-staple cotton) along with Barakat-90 for yield, quality and bacterial blight resistance, Gezira State, Sudan. This study was conducted in theGezira Research Station, of the Agricultural Research Corporation(ARC), at Gezira State, Wad Medani, Sudan during the season 2014/2015. The genotypes were tested using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Significant differences were recorded for number of sympodial branches, number of bolls, disease severity, lint yield, seed cotton yield, ginning out-turn and number of seeds/boll. Non-significant differences were observed among genotypes forboll weight, lint index, seed index, number of monopodial branches, earliness (%) and 100 seed weight.Results indicated that genotype Ex21 has an average seed cotton yield advantage of 82% over Barakat-90,fiber length of 33.3 , micronairevalue of 3.9 and fiber strength of 35.6 better than Barakat-90. It has a GOT of 34.5% compared to 31.8% for Barakat-90. It recorded a disease severity of 0.63compared to 1.33for Barakat-90. Hence this genotype emerged as a new candidate with new traits ; higher seed cotton yield, earliness of maturity, less vulnerability to bacterial blight, higher GOT, higher number of sympodial branches, high lint yield and better fiber characteristics overwhelming the commercial cotton cultivar Barakat-90. Genotype Ex21 is a promising line and excels the other tested genotypes in most of the parameters measured. The good traits found in this genotype can be used and transferred to new genotypes in a breeding program. .
