Résumé
The current global energy supply is still based on the predominant use of fossil fuels. In consideration of the impending shortage of fossil fuels, increasing environmental pollution and the growing demand for energy, it seems obvious to revert to an increased use of renewable energy sources in the future. There is great potential in solar energy production in deserts and dry regions. Here, the annual solar irradiation is much higher than the current global energy consumption per year. For the generation of solar electricity there are two promising technologies available : on the one hand the direct generation of electricity with photovoltaic, and on the other hand the generation of heat and subsequent conversion into electricity with concentrating solar thermal power. On site electrical energy is generated by various solar power plant technologies (parabolic trough, concentrating photovoltaic etc.) and afterwards it is distributed, at a relatively low-loss, via a high-voltage direct current transmission network. The present study provides an analysis of the potential for solar energy generation in African deserts and the challenges and risks involved therein. In addition, an attempt is made by using various strategies to answer the question of the future sustainability of solar power from deserts.
