Résumé
Wadi El-Rayan depression (southwest of Cairo in the western desert of Egypt) holds two man-made lakes and created as a reservoir for agricultural wastewater. This work presents an attempt to declare the status of water quality including anions, cations, nutrient salts and trace metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cd), besides concentrations of trace metals, organic matter and carbonate in the lake’s sediments were assessed in Wadi El-Rayan lakes seasonally from summer 2009 to spring 2010. The present results revealed that, the major ions (Cl-, SO4 2-, Ca2+ and Mg2+) concentrations and salinity (TDS) in the 1st lake are less than the 2nd condition was governed mainly by ; the intrusion of drainage water through El-Wadi Drain. In the 2nd lake, the rate of evaporation and the amount of water discharged from the 1st are the main factors controls these concentrations. On the other hand, salinity (TDS) and major ions show highly significant difference between two lakes. On the other side, elevated concentrations of nutrient salts and trace metals in water and sediments were recorded and often associated with the impacts of urbanization, where station 1R1 showed the highest values in lakes sediment. Finally, the 2nd lake undergoes progressive increase in salinity, especially in the last decade and the lake water may be salinized with time, leading to a great revolutionize in fauna, flora and environment of these lakes.
