Conservation and valorization of native germplasm of mediterranean region. Morpho ecological characterization of sicilian flora species for sustainable use

Résumé
In this study the potential of 150 plant taxa, belonging to 79 genera and 33 families, identified during a three years survey in different Sicilian territories and habitats, including the Aeolian and Aegadian Islands has been investigated. Highly diffused species were studied (Arbutus unedo, Coronilla valentina, Emerus major, Erica arborea, Erica multiflora, Lomelosia cretica, Lonicera implexa, Myrtus communis, Pistacia lentiscus, ecc.), as well as endemic species such as Anthemis aetnensis, A. cupaniana and several species of the genus Centaurea, Euphorbia, Genista and Jacobaea were evaluated. Cytisus aeolicus and Silene hicesiae, growing only on the Aeolian Islands, were particularly investigated in order to define protocols for in-situ conservation. Different assays were performed to assess seed germinative behaviour on 27 species by operating at constant and fluctuating temperature and light/dark regimes. Seedling emergence of 87 species (55 genera, 24 families) and stem cutting propagations (72 secies, 45 genera, 20 families) were carried in a private nursery company. Phenological and morphological characteristics, at different growth stages, were also recorded. The investigation enabled to assess adaptability for pot cultivation and to organise a large living collection of wild plants. Factors affecting seed germination and the germination capacity, as well the emergence and rooting rates were investigated providing information for species-specific protocols in order to integrate the ex-situ with the in-situ plant conservation. The data obtained revealed species with rapid synchrony and high rate of germination and seedling emergence (80-100%), i.e. Centaurea aeolica, Erysimum etnense, E. bonannianum, Euphorbia dendroides, E. rigida, Iberis semperflorens, Ptilostemon greuteri, Silene fruticosa, S. hicesiae, and plants with low germination and seedling emergence (i.e. Capparis spinosa subsp. spinosa var. canescens, etc.). Some species, Anthemis maritima, Centaurea aeolica, C. busambarensis, Lomelosia cretica, Pallenis maritima, Teucrium flavum, T. fruticans and species of the genus Helichrysum and Jacobaea showed a good aptitude to propagation by herbaceous stem cuttings. In addition, about 20 native plants with a highly ornamental value have been identified, such as Achillea maritima, Cerastium tomentosum, Iberis semperflorens, Lomelosia cretica, Pallenis maritima, Pseudoscabiosa limonifolia, Ptilostemon greuteri, Silene fruticosa, Teucrium flavum and taxa belonging to the genus Anthemis, Centaurea, Dianthus, Euphorbia, Helichrysum and Jacobaea.
