Among the Brazilian biomes, the Caatinga is one that has potential to be exploited for its se in wood in construction, although its tree species have medium/short height characteristics and tortuous stems with small diameters. Thus, the present study aims to characterize the Angico, Jurema-preta, Mororó and Pereiro species originating from the Caatinga biome for use in civil construction. The samples were extracted from 48 trees, 12 of each species. The species were taken from the Riacho do Cabra Farm, located in the Municipality of Santa Cruz-RN. The wood splitting was carried out at the Escola Agrícola de Jundiaí (EAJ) in the municipality of Macaíba-RN and the characterization tests were carried out at the University of São Paulo (USP) in São Carlos-SP. Dendrological data such as the base diameter, diameter at breast height, stem height and total height of selected trees were collected and analyzed. The characterization corresponded to tests of basic and apparent density, dimensional stability, compressive strength, parallel traction to the fibers and shear strength according to NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997). The data were analyzed according to the NBR 7190 norm (ABNT, 1997), calculating the characteristic strengths, the mean values and the standard deviation of the variables. The Pearson correlation test was used and the level of significance was set at 5%. Wood applications in construction were carried out according to the IPT (2013) and IPT/SUDAM (1981), using the Nahuz (1974) and Nogueira (1991) classification criteria. Systems and structural elements and constructive components were indicated for the use of these woods. The species presented mechanical and physiological property values that accredited them to be used in light civil construction. There were a significant number of correlations between the physical properties, highlighting the relationships between the basic and apparent density and the dimensional stability properties of Angico, Jurema-preta and Pereiro. Thus, the physical properties and the studied resistance and rigidity values were representative for all species, evidencing their use in civil construction in some systems and structural and constructive elements
