Présentation
Zayandeh Rud is one of the most important watershed in the Central Zagros region and feeds into the Gavkhouni Wetland (Ramsar Site), passing through the historic city of Isfahan. However Zayandeh has been facilg water shortages, partially due to climate change and partially due to mismanagement of water resources. In fact, Gavkhouni Wetland has been dry in recent years. The IPCM approach which has already been tested in the Uromiyeh Lake as well as Lake Parishan, emphasizes on working directly with farmers and engaging them in reducing the water usage in agriculture as well as chemicals (pesticides/insecticides/fertilizers/herbicides). This project aims to build on previous project experiences of GEF/SGP as well as CIWP (GEF funded project), training the farmers and building their capacities in implementing more sustainable agriculture practices to reduce demand on water resources and chemicals. The objectives of the project are two-folds : Building capacity of farmers in forming self-organized groups (CBOs) towards sustainable agriculture ; Raising awareness and knowledge of farmers and other stakeholder groups in Climate Change, impacts and mitigation, through conservation of biodiversity in agriculture. The project activities include identification of pilot areas, holding workshops with key stakeholders, establishment of local information centres, capacity building workshops, and knowledge production.
