Résumé
The thesis studies Algerian development and urbanisation, with particular reference to Skikda, Eastern Algeria. The study is divided into two parts. Part One analyses Algeria’s economic development in terms of the geographical background, the economic structure, the evolution of development strategies and their relationship to regional economic theory. Part Two is a case study of Skikda, which includes empLrical detail at the regional and local level to test the general conclusions arrived at in Part One. In particular, this part examines the spatial and economic transformation of Skikda and the acceleration of interregional migration as a consequence. Finally, the conclusion attempts to contribute to the reappraisal of the past planning strategies and to review future options.
