Bankandi Kougane Bagane Community - Wells for Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso

Titre : Bankandi Kougane Bagane Community - Wells for Burkina Faso

Pays : Burkina Faso

Date : Installed - Oct 2013

Project Type : Borehole Well and Hand Pump
Program : Wells for Burkina Faso

When the team arrived, families had been forced to gather water from a nearby creek to sustain their water needs. Because of this, families were suffering from diarrhea and severe dehydration among other preventable water-related illnesses. This confirmed the importance of this borehole repair. During the well rehabilitation, the team made repairs to/replaced the : pump head, pump handle, pump rods, pump reservoir, riser main and drop pipe, cylinder and chain. Since the well’s installation in 2011, the PVC pipes had broken numerous times leading to a halt in clean water availability. This time, all the PVC parts were removed and replaced with superior quality stainless steel which will not break or rust. The borehole is 51 meters deep with a static water level of eight meters. Not only did the team restore clean water to Kougane Bagane, but they also brought important information on hygiene and sanitation. They taught about hand-washing, how to properly transport and store water, disease transmission and prevention, how to maintain proper care of the pump, as well as signs and symptoms of dehydration and how to make an Oral Rehydration Solution. All of these lessons were taught in a participatory method to help community members discover ways to improve their hygiene and sanitation choices and implement community-driven solutions. The main challenge to this project was accessing the well site due to the low creek crossing. After the rainy season, it was hard to reach the well site for our team, and even for the people of the village. During the team’s stay, community members assembled a Water Committee who assisted the team with the water project whenever possible and who are responsible for maintaining the well after the team leaves the area.
