Titre : Support for agro-ecology : Kadiogo, Boulkiemdé, Bazéga, Zoundwéogo, Boulgou and Yatenga provinces (Burkina Faso)

Pays : Kadiogo, Boulkiemdé, Bazéga, Zoundwéogo, Boulgou and Yatenga provinces

Durée : January 2011 - December 2013

Objectifs
The project aimed to promote methods of farming and breeding livestock that have a positive impact on the lives of local producers and on the environment. It planned to train small producers in new ecological approaches to farming, focusing on poultry, gardening and bee keeping. It also covered irrigation and land fertilisation, in order to improve food security and farmer household revenues, as well as enabling farming communities to adapt to climate change.

Résultats
During the three years of the project, 3,037 small producers (including 1,430 women) were trained in new ecological approaches to farming, focussing on gardening, bee keeping and poultry breeding. The latter being the most lucrative activity, it enabled an 80% increase in the producers’ income. The integrated and sustainable ground fertility approach promoted by the CEAS – Burkina enabled better preservation of harvested crops, reduced losses and an improved sale price. CEAS – Burkina’s research station in Gomtouaga also improved the tools used by the producers and tested a new type of hen house and fish pond. New feed formulas for poultry using local products were developed and faeces from the poultry and fish farming were used to fertilise the gardens. The sale of natural and organic products (Shea butter, cosmetics, dried fruit and vegetables, garden produce, honey, vinegar, juice, etc...) at the CEAS – Burkina shop, the only organic shop in the country, provides a singular outlet for the producers’ products.
