The overall project objective is to contribute to improving health and environmental conditions in the targeted cities of Dakar, Kaolack, Tivaouane and Touba, which are home for more than 4.5 million inhabitants, in the western and central parts of Senegal. More specifically, the project will support the Government’s efforts to establish an effective and a sustainable system for municipal solid waste management, through : a) construction of 3 municipal solid waste landfills and transfer stations, and 90 controlled waste collection points to meet the cities’ disposal needs, b) provision and roll out of about 815 units of collection equipment, and services, c) institutional support in order to assist the beneficiaries in managing solid waste systems in an effective, efficient, sustainable and environmental way, and d) launching a communication campaign to help in changing population’s behavior
