Sustainable Housing for Rural Families in Africa (Burkina Faso)

Burkina Faso

Titre : Sustainable Housing for Rural Families in Africa (Burkina Faso)

Pays  : Burkina Faso

Date : Date non précisée

Contexte
100 million of Sahelian people have no access to decent housing and no alternatives to subsistence farming. Thanks to AVN program : rural families acquire better and cheaper homes ; local farmers become independent NV masons and entrepreneurs ; NV schools for children, NV health-centers for sick people, NV barns for farmers ; local economy is stimulated, because scarce funds previously used for buying imported building materials stay in ; the environment is protected : less CO2 emission, more trees.

Présentation
Fighting poverty, broadening access to decent housing, reducing CO2 emissions : "Association La Voute Nubienne" takes the three challenges with "Earth Roof for the Sahel" : + a ROOF, the Nubian Vault, an ancient technique for comfortable, long-lasting, healthy, economical and eco-sustainable houses, requiring only mud-bricks and rocks ; + a SKILL, training on-the-job to apprentice masons from rural communities in need ; + a MARKET of autonomous NV small enterprises is pump-primed.

We organize recruitment and on-site training of Nubian Vault builders in the Sahel, help them becoming autonomous NV entrepreneurs, and provide a developing pool of clients for them through our promotional, communication, and networking activities. In 2017, 720 apprentices, masons, artisans and entrepeneurs are active in the market, 4,500 Vaults (houses, schools, dispensaries, barns, churches, mosques...), have been built for over 30,000 beneficiaries.

Impact
We stimulate the development of a market able to become self-sustainable. When it occurs, we withdraw from the territory, we target a new one and the program scales-up. Thus, if we harness the necessary financial, human, and strategic resources to maintain exponential growth of the program, as we did so far, we may in the long-term obtain key macro-economic and ecological impacts, benefiting 20 million people, 5-10% of the relevant population of the Sahel affected by 2030.
