Public schools in most areas of Palestine are not able to meet the needs of their students. They are often too crowded with 40 or 50 students in a classroom. Sometimes schools even run in shifts to accommodate all the children. Additionally, some children face difficulties readjusting to school life after traumatic incidents like home demolition or arrest that are part of life under occupation. It’s vital for the future of the society that Palestinian children learn to love reading and learning.

The Middle East Children’s Alliance partners with community organizations in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem to set up children’s libraries and provide an array of educational activities including storytelling, creative writing, and reading buddies. The public schools in Palestine are overcrowded and emphasize memorization over critical thinking. These libraries are a great way to encourage love of learning and to develop new skills in reading and writing.

The Middle East Children’s Alliance supports children’s libraries in different areas of Palestine that promote literacy and creativity. Through creative writing workshops, storytelling days, and art projects, the libraries are able to attract children and develop a love of learning that lasts for a lifetime.

Reading and being read to at an early age is not just about literacy. Studies have also shown that reading improves children’s self-confidence, attention span, and even math scores ! All of these benefits are key to a child’s future success in school and in life. Through these library programs, we are giving approximately 300 children growing up under occupation a better chance at success.
