Résumé
Saudi Arabia ranks among the world’s largest consumers of groundwater. As a result, the groundwater level has fallen in many locations in the Kingdom, with serious consequences for many long-established farming areas such as the Al-Hassa oasis, the focus of the present study. The agricultural water situation is described at both the national level within the broader context of the recent economic development of Saudi Arabia and at the local level. Before any measures can be introducedto control or rationalise agricultural water consumption it is essential to secure reliable information about water resources in the oasis and about farmers’ existing irrigation practices. The farmers of Al-Hassa oasis are described in terms of selected physical, educational and socio-economic characteristics. Their sources of irrigation water and the nature of the role of the Al-Hassa Irrigation and Drainage Authority (HIDA) in water provision is established. The methods of irrigation practised in Al-Hassa oasis are identified together with an assessment of farmers’ awareness of alternative, water conserving irrigation practices. The extent of weed growth is evaluated, and the effectiveness of on-farm water distribution is examined. The farmers’ sources of agricultural water information are established, and consideration is given to the farmers’ expressed preference for an organisation to be responsiblefor agricultural water extension. Finally, recommendations are made to assist planners in reaching appropriate decisions about water conservation in the Kingdom as a whole and at the farm level in Al-Hassa oasis.
