Résumé
This research aims at elaborating a methodology for water storage development using open source materials. The storage would insure water, food, energy and environmental security. The case study of the research is the Mara River, a trans-boundary river between Kenya and Tanzania. In the Mara River Basin, the river is the main source for many sectors and there have been problems regarding water quantity, mainly in dry periods. The research shows the deficit between the demands and the river flows, on the Amala river, and there is a storage requirement in order to redistribute the inflows. Storage development in this research wasundertaken using open source GIS software and free available datasets. Open source algorithms proven to be efficient in deriving the storage capacity of a given dam.The research also investigates the possibility of incorporating hydropower development in the proposed storage scheme and proves that this is a hidden treasure that can benefit the region.Environmental sound designs and approaches are described at the end of the research. Environment preservation, especially in the case of the Mara, is very important and any development of storage facilities should be taking into account environmental requirements of the system.
