Résumé
Ten Egyptian wheat cultivars (viz ; Misr 1, Misr 2, Gemmeiza 9, Gemmeiza 11, Sids 12, Sids 13, Sakha 93, Sakha 94, Shandaweel 1 and Giza 168) were evaluated for their response to drought. In a semi- field experiment, drought was imposed by withholding water from the 45- day old plants for 21 days ; with a control set for each cultivar being irrigated to field capacity throughout the whole experimental period. At heading stage, flag leaf agro- histological traits (agronomy, anatomy and ultrastructure) of the studied cultivars along with their photosynthetic efficiency (pigment fractions, leaf gas exchange and carbohydrates content) were evaluated. Also, cellular membrane features of the studied plants in relation to their enzymatic antioxidant defense system were assessed vis-à-vis their water status in relation to their capacity for osmotic regulation ; and all was correlated with shoot agronomy. In addition, leaf epidermal features, abscisic acid content and fatty acids proportions were determined. At yield, yield attributes and biochemical aspects of the yielded grains were evaluated. Furthermore, the pooled data were subjected to intensive statistical analysis via applying an advanced matrix of statistical functions at both stages. Based on the results obtained, Sids 13 seemed to be the most drought- tolerant wheat cultivar, while Shandaweel 1 may be the most drought- sensitive one when both are compared with the other concerned cultivars.
