Résumé
This thesis focuses on the quantification of groundwater recharge for the entire Wadi Sudr, Sinai using Hydrus-3d modeling. Using the characteristics of Wadi Sudr, Hydrus-3d is used to estimate the amount of infiltration into the soil and the amount of groundwater recharge. In addition, HEC-HMS is used to estimate surface runoff to complement the analysis conducted by Hydrus-3d. The Hydrus-3d model is calibrated and verified using two methods. The first method relies on rainfall data and runoff amounts computed using HEC-HMS. The second method utilizes field measurements of runoff taken at Melaha Weir that is located at Ras Sudr at the catchment outlet. Calibration and verification analysis indicates good performance of the model thereby building confidence in the model. The model is then used to develop estimates for infiltrated water volumes and groundwater recharge volumes under the most stormy year. The model results show how water balance between heavy and light stormy years is achieved and provide estimates for the recharge amount in both years. Overall, the recommendations call for an immediate intervention to study different scenarios and impacts needed to predict the recharge behavior in the future and to get effective unsaturated water modeling and management.
