Résumé
Water is the main element in our life. It contains different types of impurities that have harmful effects on human health so it has to be purified to kill bacteria and remove particulate matter, color and certain soluble ions. Simple water purification systems are very important for small communities to produce potable water. The principal objective of this study is to enhance applicability of simple technology in Egypt with reference to water filtration technique especially in rural areas using direct filtration with agricultural residues as natural filter media. A pilot plant for this study was constructed and set up at Giza water treatment plant, it consists of roughing filter contains one of this filter media (palm tree fiber - rice straw - sugar cane bagasse) and receives raw water directly from the Nile. Some results cane be obtained from this study such as up flow direction is more efficient than down flow direction in percentage removal of turbidity but less efficient in percentage removal of algae, rice straw is more efficient than palm tree fiber and sugar cane in percentage removal of algae in up flow and down flow direction and this technology can be used to produced a safe filtered water in case of using sand (0.8mm - 25cm) with palm tree fiber down flow direction with rate 20m3/m2/d
